Ayurvedic Treatment in Kerala :: Decoding Ayurveda
Ayurveda, an ancient science of medicine traces back its evolution to more than 5000 years ago in India. In fact, it is derived from two Sanskrit words; ‘Ayur’ referring to ‘life’ or ‘longevity’ and ‘Veda’ referring to ‘knowledge, learning or science’.
Ayurveda is the ‘science of life’. It identifies Health as a quality component of life and not as an aspect that is devoid of sickness. If we can maintain a good appetite, having food on time and follow a set pattern in sleep and exercise, then our lives are a lot simpler and inimitable. Ayurveda as an idea helps us recognize our individual physical, mental and natural constitutions and along with this, the surroundings we live in and our response to that is what it is all about.
Consequently, as per the Vedas, the ancient Indian scriptures, life or ‘ayur’ is a combination of the body or ‘sharira’, our senses or‘indriya’, the mind or the ‘manas’ or our ‘atma’ which is our soul which helps sustaining our life-force that is ‘prana’.
Ayurveda translates to the ‘science of life’ and understanding how to live and adapt it to our lives. Adapting and practicing Ayurveda is also based on our unique characteristics, elements, constitutions and compositions.
As per Ayurvedic beliefs and traditions, it is believed that our health is made up of one of the five elements or panchabhutams, which are earth, fire, air, water and space. Our unique physical constitutions like vata, pitta and kapha and our mental makeup or gunas.
After these factors are determined and addressed, Ayurveda attempts to treat our illnesses or sicknesses by determining the source, and not treat symptomatically. This way, when awareness is built, we can prevent chronic illnesses; understand our bodies better and thus create a perfect balance within ourselves.
